The paintings follow a rather rudimentary graphic vocabulary that comprises of a circle, a triangle and a square. The circle and triangle are said to represent natural forms. The former shows the sun and the moon, while the latter shows the mountains and pointed trees. The square supposedly represents mankind’s contribution to the world and indicates a piece of land or a sacred enclosure.

Warli paintings are probably one of the oldest art forms in the Indian subcontinent with a tradition that is said to stretch right back to around 3000 BC. An indigenous tribe or adivasi tribe known as Warlis or Varlis, that mostly live in the North Sahyadri Range of the Western Ghats and the coastal belt of Maharashtra-Gujarat, makes them. Jivya Soma Mashe is considered to be the first celebrity artist amongst Warlis. Yashodhara Dalmia, an expert on Warli art, states that Warli paintings closely resemble the murals in the rock shelters of Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh which are estimated to as old as 10,000 BC.
