Kathakali, the unique dance form of Kerala – God’s Own Country. A colourful, expression filled, traditional portrayal of the countless stories of Gods and demons. As varied and nuanced as the countless spices and masalas that this verdant stretch of land on Indian’s Malabar Coast is famous for.

Kathakali can trace its origins back almost 1500 years to the early folk dances and drama rituals such as those of the cult of Bhagyavathy as well as Sastrakali and Ezhamattukali. Its current form, with its refined gestures, subtle facial expressions and colourful costumes developed during the 17th century however.

The styles of Kathakali dance are referred to as sampradayam and the traditional styles were called Vettathu Sampradayam, Kalladikkodan Sampradayam and Kaplingadu Sampradayam. Today however, the styles have merged into two distinct forms, Kalluvazhi (northern) and Thekkan (southern) sampradayams. The legendary dancer Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon (1881-1949) is credited with having played a major role in developing the northern style.

The carved wooden headgear, that forms the main part of the Kathakali mask, is called a kiritam. While they are made all over Kerala, with differing levels of quality and consistency, Payyanur in Kannur district is where the most elaborate masks are believed to be made.
